Specialist wind energy and renewables services
Andrew McCarthy Associates was recently instructed on its 75th renewables project and now has over 10 years experience in this growing field. We commenced our first wind energy project in 1999 for National Wind Power's 'Wind Works' scheme and, since then, have assembled a substantial in-house multi-disciplinary team of 25 staff, who between them have a wide range of relevant expertise including habitat and protected species survey, ornithology, bat ecology, collision risk modeling and EIA.
We have a particular interest in bat survey and mitigation, and in early 2009 published a paper on our in-house bat survey protocols via the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management's publication In Practice. This paper is now regularly cited by Natural England and local authorities as an example of good survey practice for bats.
We sit on the BWEA's Bats Sub-Group and have been involved since the beginning of 2009 with the BWEA developing a robust research proposal to examine interactions between bats and wind farms in the UK to assist the EIA process.
We are currently involved in several exciting and innovative projects involving bats and wind farms, including studies of bat activity at height using microphones situated high in a forest canopy.
