JCB Academy in converted Arkwright Mill, Staffordshire
Client: Buro Four
Contract value: ££35,000 and ongoing
Key Services: Phase 1, bat, water vole, otter, native crayfish, mitigation
The JCB Academy, due to open to students in September 2010, will be based in Rocester, Staffordshire, near JCB world headquarters, in a sympathetically renovated and extended, grade II listed original Arkwright Mill, which is being refurbished under a PFI.
Work is already under way to create a light, airy and eco-friendly building, designed for 21st century education. AMA input has been to carry out extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey and detailed work on bats, crayfish, otter, water vole and badger. We prepared a European Protected Species License for bats to allow renovation works to proceed without harm to bats and to provide mitigation including provision of a purpose built ‘bat loft’ in the listed mill building. We will be undertaking on-site supervision and three years of post-construction monitoring, and have also prepared a detailed Mitigation Plan for habitats and protected species to satisfy planning conditions. Our input to the scheme commenced in August 2006 and is on-going.
