Extensive on and off-site works were undertaken to ditches in and around the proposed Centrepoint industrial and retail development for water vole and great crested newts. Both species were trapped and translocated, prior to development work affecting the ditches.
With respect to water voles, 26 animals were trapped and moved from the site during autumn 2006, and were transferred to a specialist holding facility in Devon for captive breeding. The on-site habitat was subsequently improved for voles over the course of the following year, with a view to releasing a number of animals back to the site.
The majority of the ditches were retained within the development and habitat creation was undertaken to benefit voles and amphibians. A sensitive management regime will be adopted to ensure the long-term security of the populations.
